The recent weather roller coaster means we may go from 45 degrees one day to 77 the next. But that doesn’t mean we get to skip spring allergies.
“Folks are definitely having these symptoms. In fact I’ve seen several people in the last two-three weeks with increased nasal congestion, drainage, even sore throat, itchy watery eyes,” says Dr. Nathan Box.
For many patients, over the counter medication will help.
“Antihistamines are great such as Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec. And even some of those contain a decongestant if they would like to take that. I don’t recommend that people be on the decongestant portion of an oral medication for more than a couple of days because it can elevate blood pressure,” says Dr. Nathan Box.
Nasal steroids like Flonase and Nasacort can help reduce swelling and inflammation inside the nose. But if symptoms persist, you may need professional help.
“If they’re still having the symptoms of the itchy, watery eyes, nasal drainage, nasal congestion, sore throat, post nasal drip. Despite those then they probably need to see their family physician,” says Dr. Nathan Box.
