TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – School is almost out for the year, and that means, a change in daily routines and activities for kids. For example, many of parents and kids are planning to spend plenty of time at the pool!

There are a few things you need to know to make sure the kids don’t come home sick after taking a dip.

Stomach bugs like norovirus are common right now. You might remember last week when dozens of kids in a Pasco County school came down with a nasty stomach virus. Doctors say pools and hot tubs can likely trigger those kinds of viruses in the summertime.

The warm water is perfect for bacteria to grow in, and younger children tend to swallow pool water whether on purpose or by accident!

Crypto is one of the most common causes for the bugs. It’s a parasite tough enough to survive even in properly maintained pools. Doctors suggest if your child becomes sick from crypto you’ll want to wait two weeks after diarrhea and vomiting stops to go swimming again.

Also, don’t let your child get in a public pool if they are already sick. Check the pools inspection rate.

Be sure to take the kids, specially the younger ones, for frequent bathroom breaks!

Other than stomach bugs, strep throat is still going around, which is common this time of the year. So, remind your kids to wash their hands to help keep germs from spreading.
